Hilltop ruins of ancient Gadara, overlooking three countries.
Information
Ancient Gadara was famed in Greco-Roman times for its philosophers and poets. From the western theatre you can see the Sea of Galilee, the Golan Heights, and the Yarmouk Gorge. A small museum sits in an Ottoman-era house at the heart of the village.
How to visit
About 110 km north of Amman, near the Syrian border. Roads are good but the last stretch winds through villages — allow extra travel time. Sunset views from the western edge are exceptional; bring something warm as wind off the Golan picks up quickly.
