The Treasury

Watch in sign language

Petra's most iconic facade, carved in the 1st century BCE.

Information

Likely built as a royal tomb for King Aretas IV, the Treasury rises 40 m and is decorated with mythological figures. The interior is a single empty chamber — the name comes from a Bedouin legend that it once held pirate treasure.

How to visit

Arrive in the morning for direct sunlight on the facade. For the famous high view, take the Bedouin-guided trail from the Royal Tombs side — roughly 700 steps each way.
