Petra

Watch in sign language

Rose-red Nabataean city carved into sandstone cliffs.

Information

Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Carved by the Nabataeans more than two thousand years ago, it served as a thriving trade hub. Highlights include the Treasury (Al-Khazneh), the Monastery (Ad-Deir), the Royal Tombs, and the long narrow gorge known as the Siq that opens onto the main valley.

How to visit

Enter through the Petra Visitor Centre in Wadi Musa. Tickets are sold on site or through the Jordan Pass. Wear sturdy shoes — it is roughly 800 m through the Siq to the Treasury, and the full circuit can exceed 8 km with steep stairs to the Monastery. Bring water; shaded rest stops are limited after midday.
