One of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities in the world.
Information
Ancient Gerasa flourished as part of the Decapolis. Today visitors walk down colonnaded streets, through Hadrian's Arch, into the oval-shaped Forum, and up to two large theatres still used for performances during the Jerash Festival.
How to visit
Jerash is about 50 km north of Amman, roughly a one-hour drive. Allow at least three hours to walk the site. There is little shade — visit early morning or late afternoon in summer. The South Theatre often hosts live bagpipe performances by local musicians.
