Hilltop site at the heart of the capital with layers of history.
Information
Jabal al-Qal'a has been occupied since the Bronze Age. Standing remains include the Temple of Hercules, an Umayyad palace, and a Byzantine church. The on-site Jordan Archaeological Museum holds artefacts from across the country, including some of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
How to visit
Reach the Citadel by taxi or a steep walk up from downtown Amman. The viewpoint over the Roman Theatre and the old city is best at sunset. Modest clothing is appreciated. The site is open daily; ticket prices are reduced with the Jordan Pass.
